Originally awarded for 22 years full-time service in UK constabularies, the qualification for the medal was reduced in January 2010 to 20 years to bring it into line with the Fire, Ambulance and Prison Services. In 1956 it was extended to Australian, Papua New Guinea and Nauru police forces.
The National Medal replaced the Australian award in 1976.
