John Plato Nelson Richards was born in Camels Head, Devonport on 1 January 1901. He joined the RN in 1925 and served on a variety of vessels in the inter-war period advancing to the rating of Stoker Petty Officer by the outbreak of WWII. He was awarded his LSGCM in April 1940 whilst serving aboard the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes. During WWII he served on a number of shore establishments and vessels before retiring on 26 May 1947.
According to the 1939 Register he was living at 11 Evelyn Street in Plymouth and was a Stoker Petty Officer with HMS Hermes.
He died in Plymouth on 18 February 1952
