William John Leonard Gay was born in Bath, Somerset on 10 May 1910. He joined the Royal Navy on 23.7.1925 and served with them throughout the inter-war period, including a stint in Palestine in 1936-39, With the commencement of WWII he served aboard a number of vessels, primarily HMS Cormorant, the shore establishment at Gibraltar, and HMS Shrapnel. the shore base at Southampton which is where he was awarded his LSGCM in 1943. 

Post-war he was commissioned into the Sea Cadet Corps earning the Cadet Forces Medal with them.

Gay died in Birmingham in 1986.
