Founded by Queen Victoria in 1900 for award to those regardless of colour, sex or creed who performed public service in India.
King George V expanded the award to include a 3rd class in bronze. The awards during Victoria and Edward VII's reign were hollow but the new King changed their size and they were also made solid.
