John Bigley was born on 4 December 1882 and was a Foreman of Works with the Royal Engineers. He resided in the Enfield Lock area and was awarded the LSGCM in 1918 and the Meritorious Service Medal for meritorious conduct in the war in 1919. 

According to the 1939 Register he was a Clerk of Works living at 500 Broad Lane, Leeds.

He served in WWII and was awarded the MBE as a Captain, temporary Major with the Royal Engineers in the New years Honours List 1943 (LG 1 January 1943). He was granted honorary rank of Major on 19 January 1945 on ceasing to be employed.
