One of three brothers, the sons of Rev Denham Norman, who all fought in WWI - two of whom perished with Charles being the only survivor.

Charles Rowdon Norman was born in Stafford in 1885. Having started out at sea, he qualified as a Master in 1910. He served with the Royal Engineers in WWI, being sent to France on 10 February 1917. He was Wounded in Action (Gassed) at Armentieres on 31 July that same year. He was selected as the only Royal Engineer officer to go on the Russian Expedition and was awarded the Military Cross (LG 1.2.1919) for his efforts.

The citation for the Military Cross reads thus:

"This officer has done consistently good work under fire during the operations of Force "C" on the River Dvina, as the only engineer officer with the Expedition. He has also, without any staff or assistance, carried our efficiently and well the duties of Ordnance Officer, Artillery Officer, Officer in Charge of Wireless and Signals. At Poutehouga, and elsewhere he has shown special zeal in the landing and re-embarking of stores, guns and wireless gear under very difficult circumstances, and his energy and devotion to duty have been have been of great assistance to the Force."

Further accolades came his way when he was awarded the Croix de Guerre (for Russia) in the LG 24 October 1919.

According to the 1939 Register he was living on Private Means at "Faraway", The Plantation Foundry Square, Penwith, Cornwall and had applied but not yet been accepted for the Emergency Reserve (Military Officers)

He passed away in Cornwall in 1961.
