Jan Hendrik Johannes Frederik Labuschagne was born in the Eastern Cape of South Africa in 1893 and was Afrikaans (of Dutch heritage). Employed by the South African Railways and Harbours as a Labourer, he enlisted for service in WWI on 28 November 1914 with the 6th Dismounted Rifles (also known as the Midland Mounted Rifles) and saw service in German South West Africa with C Squadron from 28 November 1914 until 29 April 1915 - shortly before the Germans surrendered. He was from the small rural hamlet of Elliot which is in the present-day Transkei.
Labuschagne's medals are to the rank of Burger (Private) and the unit, 6DE O.B.S. (Onberede Skutters) translates to 6th Dismounted Rifles.
He married Helena Dorothea Aucamp in Elliot on 14 December 1927.
Medals are all in good condition unless otherwise indicated. Sold with some research including his SANDF WWI Card.
