William Young was born in on 5 February 1879. He attested for service with the Royal Garrison Artillery on 3 October 1898 and saw service in the Anglo Boer War in South Africa with the 6th Eastern Division of the RGA from 31 March 1900 until being posted Home on 20 December 1901. He then saw service in Bermuda, China and India and was in Allahabad during WWI where he earned the British War Medal. For large parts of his service he was mustered as a Cook, advancing to the rank of Company Sergeant Major/WO Class II
He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal and was pensioned off after 21 years service on 7 March 1920. Sadly he didn't live very long to enjoy his retirement, passing away at Portsmouth on 4 December 1923.
