Charles Gunningham was born in Banwell, Somerset on 17 March 1846. He attested with the 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards on 26 August 1862, seeing service with them in India and in the Egyptian Campaign of 1882 for which he was awarded the medal with Tel-el - Kebir clasp. He later saw service with the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, no. 2657 and was with them in April 1887 before being discharged, Time Expired for his second term, on 21 May 1887.
He served a total of 27 years earning himself the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal in 1881. This medal is not included.
Gunningham married in London in 1893 and, at some point, moved back to Somerset (Axbridge) where he died in 1913.
