William H White was born in Morice Town, Devonport on 15 March 1852. He joined the Royal Navy on 1 April 1877 and served aboard HMS Agincourt in the Anglo Egyptian War of 1882. The Agincourt, along with HMS Northumberland and the troopship Tamar, arrived on July 16 1882, several days after the primary bombardment of Alexandria had concluded. They carried the 38th Regiment and the 3rd Battalion 60th Rifles, providing enough force to defend Alexandria and take the offensive against the Egyptian army under Ahmed ʻUrabi.

White was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal in 1893 whilst aboard HMS Widgeon. He was pensioned in 1895.
