The "Japanese Sea Disaster" refers to an earthquake that occurred on May 26, 1923 at 11.59 local time in the Sea of Japan about 100km west of the coast of Noshiro. It had a magnitude of 7.8 on the moment magnitude scale with waves exceeding 10 metres (33 ft) in some areas.
