Herbert Sadler was born in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire in 1881. He attested with the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1903 and was posted to France in WWI on 6 June 1915. He served with the X.34 Medium Trench Mortar Battery, RA on the Western Front and was Mentioned in General Haig's Dispatches in the LG of 4 January 1917 followed, a fortnight later, with the award of the Military Medal in the LG of 22 January 1917.
X.34, Y.34 and Z.34 Medium Mortar Batteries of the RFA were formed by 18 June 1916; on 6 March 1918, Z broken up and the batteries reorganised to have 6 x 6-inch weapons each.
Sadler was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal in 1923. His death was announced in the Nottingham Evening Post of 21 March 1929
