Charles Apps was born in Bishops Teignton Devon on 24 March 1872 and was 43 years of age when he attested for service with the RAMC in WWI - he appears to have lied about his age, claiming to be 41 years old when he attested at Shornecliffe on 12 June 1915. Despite his age he had no prior military service.
After initial service at Dartford Military Hospital, Apps was posted to France, landing at Rouen on 15 June 1917. He served with 19 Field Ambulance and won the Military Medal with them, for bravery in the field, announced in the London Gazette of 29 August 1918.
His address on enlistment was 17 Alexandra Terrace, Teignmouth, Devon. He was discharged to the Reserve on 17 February 191 with a Conduct Rating of Very Good. Apps was also a fervent member of St John Ambulance Brigade and was awarded their service medal in 1926 as part of the Teignmouth Division.
According to the 1939 Register he was a Kiosk Cleaner living at 10 French Street, Teignmouth.
He died in 1960.
