Joseph Lester was born in Coseley, Staffordshire on 8 July 1896. He enlisted for service with the South Staffordshire Regiment on 12 December 1915 and was posted to France on 18 July 1917. He was Wounded in Action on 19 September 1917, the Medical Report stating that this was at Ypres where he was hit by a shell in both thighs and his left middle finger - two joints.
He was transferred to the Labour Corps on 14 October 1918 and discharged to the Reserve on 16 January 1919. His Character was regarded as Fair and the address provided for him was 32 Hollywell St, Bilston, Staffordshire. He was awarded a Silver War Badge, No. B78877, for Wounds received in action which disabled him to a 30% extent.
According to the 1939 Register Lester was living at 68 Inhedge Street, Sedgley and was a Castor (Heavy worker) by trade. He died at Stourbridge in the West Midlands in January 1978.
