John Owens was born in Tenbury, Worcestershire on 20 January 1876. He saw service with the 2nd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment in the Anglo Boer War and, although not involved in the initial set-piece battles of the war, he would have seen plenty of action with the Mounted Infantry component of his regiment in the Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal as the attempts to hem the wily Boers in through successive "drives" intensified.
With the onset of WWI Owens returned to his old regiment for service with No. 33072 and was later transferred to the Labour Corps with No. 278905. He was discharged to the Reserve on 18 February 1919 whilst living at 6 Club Place, Blackwater, Hampshire. According to the 1921 England census he was a Dormitory Servant with the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.
At the time of the 1939 Register, Owens was a Fatigue Man at the same establishment with his home address as before.
Owens died in Surrey in January 1950.
