The Women's Voluntary Service (WVS) Medal, later the Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) Medal, was instituted in 1961 to recognize 15 years of dedicated voluntary service by women (and men) for the WVS organization, which played a crucial role in British civil defence, especially during WWII, by providing rest centers, food, and aid during air raids.
