Claude Edgar Butcher was born in Gibraltar on 16 August 1898. He came to England with his parents at the age of 4 and joined the army as a boy soldier prior to WWI. He served in East Africa, Mesopotamia & India and later transferred to the Royal Signals, serving with no. 2306477 serving with 3rd Wireless Signal Squadron in Afghanistan in 1919. His medals were issued in India.
Having returned to England, Butcher was employed by the Post Office for 34 years until his retirement in 1960. He was stationed at Wolverton where he was in charge of the postal stores, but also worked at the Stony-Stratford Post office before being transferred to Bletchley. Butcher was also chairman of the Bletchley branch of the Union of Post Office Workers.
According to the 1939 Register Butcher was a Sorting Clerk and Telegraphist with the GPO, living in Buckingham Road, Bletchley.
He died in Hythe, Kent on 3 August 1973.
