George Ernest Wiggins was born in Grays, Essex on 19 November 1918. He enlisted with the Royal Engineers on 29 October 1939 and was posted to 288 Field Company. Deployed to the Far East, he was taken Prisoner of War when Singapore fell to the Japanese on 15 February 1942.

He was incarcerated at various camps including Wang-Yai (8 October 1942), Khai-Sai-Yok (10 October 1944) and Tomajo (8 December 1944), before being liberated on 30 August 1945. 

According to the 1939 Register he was a Dock Labourer living with his family in Thurrock, Essex. His next of kin, according to the record card kept by the Japanese authorities was his wife Vera Eileen Wiggins living at 1 Sungate Cottage, Collier Row Road, Romford, Essex.

Wiggins' medals were posted to him on 24 May 1950 to 134 William Street, Grays, Essex. He passed away in Tower Hamlets, London in December 1985.
