Arthur Austin was born in Wigan, Lancashire in 1919. According to the 1921 Census he was living with his parents at the Royal Infirmary in Wigan where his father was a Porter.
He served with the 2/3 Cavalry Ambulance of the RAMC in Palestine before seeing further service in WWII in North Africa where he was taken Prisoner of War on 20 June 1942 with the fall of Tobruk. Initially interned by the Italians, the records indicate that he was repatriated on 3 July 1943 which would indicate that he either escaped or was sent back for an undisclosed reason.
According to a newspaper report he had been overseas since October 1938.
