Vernon Harding Allen was born in Wimbledon, Surrey in October 1896. He saw service with the 1st Army Signals Coy. R.E. in France from 10 February 1915. He was admitted to No. 12 General Hospital on 8 May 1915 for an undisclosed ailment. Thereafter he was treated for Dental Caries on 2 August 1917. He was reported Wounded in Action on 24 April 1918.
Having survived the war, Allen made the newspapers when, in an article in the 14 June 1929 edition of the Thanet Advertiser, under the heading "Lamp Post Wrecked", it was said that,
"A motor coach, laden with passengers, was damaged, but no personal injuries were sustained, in a collision with a private car at the junction of the Margate Road and Epple bay Road, Birchington, on Saturday afternoon.
The car, driven by Vernon Harding Allen, of Queen Elizabeth Street, Walthamstow, was coming out of Epple bay Road when it collided with the motor coach, which was proceeding along the main Margate Road in the direction of Birchington. As a result of the impact the lighter vehicle was hurled across the road, knocking down a lamp standard in its path. Both cars were damaged, but no one was injured."
According to the 1939 Register he was a Time Keeper and Store Keeper living at 112 Markhouse Road, Walthamstow.
He passed away at Rochford, Essex in June 1963.
