John William Stokes was born in Chelsea, London on 14 June 1884. He attested for service with the Royal Engineers on 25 May 1915 at which time he was a Telegraph Wireman living at 5 Church Street, Ordsall, Retford, Nottinghamshire. As a Sapper he was posted to France with the Signal Depot on 27 June 1915. he was returned to the United Kingdom on 29 September 1915 and discharged, no longer physically fit for war service, on 1 June 1916.
On discharge at Fenny Stratford Depot he was described as "Industrious, clean and punctual", and given a Military Character rating of Very Good. The cause of his earfly discharge was given as "Deafness in both ears." The Medical Board which sat on 17 May 1916 found that,
"Originated 9 months ago, Hazelbrook, France. Operated on for Haemorrhoids at Etaples September 1915.Extremely deaf - can hear conducted sounds with tuning fork on mastoid - but badly direct. Result of active service - been deaf ever since he was operated on September 1915 -permanent presents 1/4."
Stokes was awarded a Silver War Badge (not with the medals) no. 144 471.
Medals are in good condition unless indicated otherwise. Sold with some research and a R.E. cap badge.
