Francis Walter Robert Townsend was born in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight on 20 September 1891. He was an early entrant to WWI, being despatched to France with "L" Signal Company of the Royal Engineers on 16 August 1914.He was promoted to the rank of 2nd Acting Corporal. Townsend survived the war and was, according to the 1939 Register, living at 38 Cherington Road, West On Lyn, Bristol where he was recorded as being a Civil Servant - this would be a reference to his employment with the Post Office.
He appears in the 1951 Post Office Register as an Overseer in the Bristol office. Having retired to Exmouth in Devon, he passed away there on 23 July 1973.
His 1914 Star was originially returned by him for correction to the spelling of his surname. This was amended and a new medal issued to him on 26 February 1920.
