Queens South Africa Medal (9 L.CORPL. P. O' CONNOR. BARKLY WEST T.G.)
Patrick O' Connor served with the Barkly West Town Guard in the Anglo Boer War. Initially returned unclaimed, his QSA medal was posted to him at Longlands in the Barkly West district of the Karoo in the Cape Colony in 1909. A total of only 47 medals were awarded to this Town Guard.
The Barkly West TG was called out for active service on the 27th December 1900, and continued to perform Permanent Military duty until 1 July 1902, the date on which the corps was finally disbanded.
That they were in the fighting is confirmed by a press report in the Evening Star of 18 February 1902 which mentions that:
"At Wilge River on the 9th (February 1902). the Canadian Scouts had five men wounded, and the 6th Dragoons one man wounded, while at Sleingfontein (Barkly West), on the 13th, the Barkly West Town Guard lost five men captured and Intelligence Department Agent Otto Thoedore Keitz wounded and made prisoner."
O'Connor moved to Durban in Natal in later life where he passed away on 29 March 1930 at the age of 66. He was a pensioned Civil Servant in the Mines Department at the time of his death.
