Charles Cuthbert Collingwood was born in St Austell, Cornwall in 1873. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class at St Vincent. He joined his first ship HMS Algernon on 25 September 1890 and was rated Ordinary Seaman (Seaman Gunner) on 19 August 1891 and progressed to Able Seaman on 8 September 1892. He qualified as a torpedo operator and was advanced to Leading Seaman on 20 November 1895. He joined Wildfire on 12 December 1895 and was advanced to Petty Officer on 1 April 1896.
Collingwood joined HMS Speedy on 13 January 1897 and was advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class aboard this vessel on 1 March 1897.
He held various appointments between 1902 and 1913, joining Highflyer on 6 June 1913 and was awarded the 1911 Coronation Medal. He served aboard this ship until 11 June 1917. HMS Highflyer served on the West African Station and was in action with the German "Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse." He was promoted to Chief Gunner on 3 July 1917 and joined Torpedo Boat No. 3 of the Harwich Destroyer Flotilla until joining Hercules on 18 February 1920. He retired at his own request on 28 July 1920 with the rank of Lieutenant. He died on 27 August 1932.
