William Ernest Kirkpatrick was born in Bombay, India on 6 September 1874 and having decided to study medicine, qualified as a 3rd Class Assistant Surgeon in 1895. He served in this capacity in both the Punjab Frontier and Tirah campaigns of 1897-98.
He was first commissioned on 18 September 1905 and gradually rose up the ranks to 1st Class Assistant Surgeon on 1 September 1910. He was awarded the Delhi Durbar Coronation Medal in 1910 whilst a Civil Surgeon working out of Satara.
With the outbreak of WWI on 4 August 1914 he served with the Indian Expeditionary Force "B" in Mesopotamia attached to 15 Casualty Clearing Station as a 1st Class Asst Surgeon from 10 May to 16 July 1916. He served with C.F.A. from 3rd August to 3rd October 1916 and was placed in medical charge of 7 Advanced Depot, Medical Stores, Arob Village. He was admitted to hospital with Beri Beri on 11 October 1916 and was invalided to India.
He subsequently served in the Afghan War from 15 May 1919 until 27 January 1921.
According to the 1929 Army List he was appointed Senior Assistant Surgeon (with the rank of Major) on 7 November 1922.
