William Heggie aka William Johnstone Heggie was born in Bathgate, Scotland on 12 December 1877 (some records say 1879). Having decided to see service in the Anglo Boer War he enlisted with the Cape Police at Glasgow on 3 January 1902, providing his address as 91 St Andrew's Road, Pollokshields. A Storeman by occupation he was posted to King Williamstown in the Eastern Cape where he continued to serve until taking his discharge on 15 February 1905.

Opting to remain in South Africa, he wed Christina Keth in King Williamstown on 31 July 1906 by which time he was a Shop Keeper. He later became a Manufacturer, relocating to the nearby port city of East London. He died whilst on a trip to his native Scotland on 24 May 1923.
