Queens South Africa Medal clasps Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal (5658 PTE. F. HOLLAND. R.A.M.C.) - with very clear ghost dates
Frederick Holland has an interesting history - born in Somerstown, Middlesex on 16 February 1860, he enlisted with the Medical Staff Corps on 19 October 1883 and, according to an affadavit he signed on 4 February 1886, did so under an alias. His affadavit read thus: -
"I Frederick Holland do solemnly declare that I was enlisted on the 19th October 1883 under the name of Frederick Parsons which name I now declare to be incorrect. The name of Frederick Holland contained in the accompanying Certificate of Birth I now declare to be my true name, and I make the solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true.
Declared at Southampton on the 2nd day of February 1886."
According to his marriage certificate, dated 9 October 1893, he was a Medical Attendant by occupation.
Although his RAMC papers don't exist we know that he enlisted for service in the Anglo Boer War and served at No.8 Field Hospital in the Natal Theatre. His medal was awarded off the RAMC roll dated at Dundee, Natal on 17 August 1901.
In 1921 a request was made for his discharge documents with the reply reading, " This man enlisted into the Medical Staff Corps on 19.10.1883 and was transferred to the Army Reserve on 18.10.1890 and finally discharged on 18.10.1895. This is the only information in my possession."
Medal is in good condition unless indicated otherwise. Sold with some research.
