CUFLIN. LEICESTER REGT.) - transcribing clerks working from the medal rolls often made mistakes with the spelling of names.

John Cufflin was born in Ansty, Leicester in 1873 and was a Shoe Polisher when he attested in 1893 for service with the Leicestershire Regiment. He served at Talana where the Leicesters were left to guard the camp and ward off any attack should the Boers have made it that far. Having retired on Ladysmith he and his comrades were caught up in the siege for the next four months and he would have fought in any number of the skirmishes which characterised the British defensive effort to keep the Boers at bay. He later saw action at Laings Nek, the last battle to expel the enemy from Natal, and at Bergendal (Belfast) - He took his discharge in 1909 but put his hand up for WWI where, with the Labour Corps, he was WIA in France on 9.6.1918.

The 1939 Register has him living at 29 Loughborough Road, Mountsorrel, Barrow-Upon-Soar where he was described as being Incapacitated.

He died in 1946 "on the highway on the Leicester road" at the age of 73.
