Edward Mitchell Merritt was born in Beverley, Yorkshire on 12 March 1876. A Collar and Saddle Maker by tarde, he attested for service with the Royal Field Artillery on 11 December 1899 and was posted to South Africa to take part in the Anglo Boer War on 3 January 1900. Mustered to the 76th Bty RFA, he served in a number of the seminal battles of the war including the taking of Johannesburg, Pretoria (Diamond Hill) and the surrender of the Boer General Prinsloo in the Brandwater Basin in July 1900 (Wittebergen). He was employed as a Collar Maker during his service

He returned to the UK, Time Expired on 29 May 1901 and was discharged to the Reserve. He was one of only twelve men from Beverley who were conferred with the Freedom of the Borough in 1903 for their services as volunteers during the Anglo Boer War.

According to the 1939 Register he was a Saddler living at 36 Marshall Street, Kingston-upon-Hull. He died in Beverley in June 1943.

Medal is in good condition unless otherwise indicated. Sold with some research.
