John Allen was a 19 year old Labourer from Deptford in Kent when he attested for service with the Border Regiment on 30 September 1895. He served in Malta and Crete before being posted to South Africa on 29 September 1899 in anticipation of the Anglo Boer War which commenced on 11 October 1899.
The 1st battalion, Border Regiment was heavily engaged in the Natal theatre, specifically in the operations leading up to the Relief of Ladysmith in December 1899 and the first few months of 1900. Allen saw service in most of the significant early actions of the campaign earning the Tugela Heights and Relief of Ladysmith clasps to his Queens Medal.
He was posted back to England on 9 September 1902 after almost 3 full years in South Africa. He was discharged to the Reserve on 29 September 1907 after his 12 years obligation had expired.
