William Rush was born in Anerley, Surrey on 21 November 1876. He enlisted with the 6th Dragoons in 1894, transferring to the 5th (Irish) Lancers in 1898 at which point he was posted to South Africa. He was in the Defence of Ladysmith from 2 November 1899 until liberated by General Buller on 28 March 1900. He was returned to the UK in 1901 thus not eligible for the Kings South Africa Medal.

Rush emigrated to the USA in 1914, settling down in Detroit, Michigan where he was a Merchant. When WWI broke out he headed over the border into Canada to enlist with the Irish Canadian Rangers of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 13 September 1916 although, at the age of 41, it is unclear if he was ever posted overseas.

The manager of a Putt Putt Cafe in 1948, he died in San Diego, California on 26 June 1955
