Awarded for 180 days operational service between 3rd September 1939 and 2nd September 1945, service personnel in the majority of cases had to qualify for this medal prior to accumulating time towards other campaign stars.
The exceptions were the Italy, Burma, Pacific and France and Germany Stars, see those products for further details.
Those who qualified for the Battle of Britain clasp wore a distinctive gold rosette on the ribbon of the medal when ribbons alone were worn.
