Originally awarded in silver or bronze, a higher class, in silver-gilt was instituted by George V. This can be worn alongside silver or bronze versions of the medal, taking precedence in the order of wear.
Foreign recipients wear a ribbon with an additional central white stripe to distinguish them as designated associates.
