Charles Scaife was born in Denton, Durham in 1886. He enlisted for service with the 2nd Border Regiment and saw service with them in France from 5 October 1914. He was almost immediately returned to England and hospitalised for a short duration on 28 October and was entitled to wear a Wound Stripe as a result. He was alter posted to the Depot, Border Regiment for further service.

Post-war he was engaged in the Waziristan fracas of 1921-24 with the 1st Border Regiment, earning the medal and clasp. In the same year he was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal - on 19 July 1924.

Scaife sought and gained employment with the Railways and worked for them as a Railways Goods Guard. This was still his occupation at the time of the 1939 Register - he was living at 21 The Crescent, Westmorland. 

Scaife passed away in January 1970.
