Ernest Louis Larter was born in Gosport, Hampshire on 7 March 1883. At the age of 18 he attested for service with the 13th Hussars in 1901. He was posted to India in 1903 and served there until 1911, earning the Delhi Durbar Medal as part of the Massed Bands Camp in the Civil allotment in his last year there.
He was sent to France on 15 December 1914 . His nickname was "Crook". He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal in 1916.
According to the 1939 Register he was a Clerk in the War Office and an Army Pensioner living at 8 Kirby Road, Horswell, Farnham, Surrey.
He died in Surrey in 1947
