Thomas Newton Turnbull was born in Newcastle, England in about 1880. With the outbreak of WWI he served with the Cape Garrison Artillery as well as the 2nd Brigade, Heavy Artillery in German South West Africa with no. A6533.

He sailed for Luderitz Bay in South West Africa on the S.S. Rufiidji on 1 December 1914 serving in that theatre until the cessation of hostilities on 31 July 1915.

He then attested for service with the Base depot Company, completing the forms at Johannesburg on 11 December 1915, he was posted to Durban. He provided his sister, Mrs Bedford of 49 Wilton Street, Middlesboro as his next of kin. A Boiler Maker by trade, he was 35 at the time and confirmed his prior service in German South West Africa.

His assigned no with the BDC was 2. He was discharged Medically Unfit on 4 February 1916 and sent home to Johannesburg. He had suffered with Gastritis (5 January 1916) and Haemorrhoids (8 February 1916)
