British War Medal (542 DVR. J.C. ERASMUS - S.A.S.C. M.T.); War Medal 1939-45 (225536 J.C. ERASMUS); Africa Service Medal (225536 J.C. ERASMUS)
Johannes Carl Erasmus was born in the Transvaal, South Africa on 27 October 1897. He attested for service as a Driver with the South African Service Corps on 25 November 1916 with No. 542 and saw only Home Service until he was discharged at his own request on 20 August 1918. His next of kin was his wife, Mrs J.S. Erasmus of 256 Vermeulen Street, Pretoria.
His first wife having passed away, Erasmus married for a second time in 1927 to Johanna Emerentia Smal and, by the outbreak of WWI in 1939 was living at 23, 6th Avenue, Bezuidenhout Valley, Johannesburg. A mechanic by trade, he attested for service on 31 January 1941 and was posted to the Technical Service Corps at Premier Mine, Pretoria with No. 225536. He was seconded to 18th Field Ambulance. M.T.C. at Sonderwater on 12 February 1941 and was discharged on 27 April 1943. His WWII medals were posted to him on 24 September 1956. Shortly thereafter he successfully applied for his WWI British War Medal which was sent to him on 14 December 1956.
Erasmus married a total of four times - his last marriage, to Antoinette Johanna Hawley, took place on 14 February 1959 eighteen months before his death on 14 December 1960 at the age of 63 from Rheumatoid Arthritis and a Pulmonary Oedema. He was living at 80, 9th Avenue, Bezuidenhout Valley at the time of his death and was described as an invalid.
