John Noble Taylor was born in Scarborough in 1859. Apprenticed at the early age of 13 in 1873, he served aboard a variety of vessels including the Greta in 1879. He blotted his copybook in 1902 when he deserted whilst docked in Hamburg. A seasoned Mariner by the time WWI broke out, he was aboard the Susquehanna in 1915.
The SUSQUEHANNA was built in 1896 by Barclay, Curle & Co. at Glasgow with a tonnage of 3711grt, a length of 350ft, a beam of 45ft 4in and a service speed of 10 knots. With a profile similar to that of the Sabine she was completed as the Mount Sephar for Smith & Service of Glasgow. She was acquired by the Union Steam Ship Co. in 1898 and renamed Susquehanna for their South Africa to USA service.
Taylor was awarded the RNR Long Service Medal in 1910
He passed away in Scarborough in 1931.
