Frederick Hugh Barrett was born in St Thomas, Devon on 25 March 1899. A newspaper report of 18 May 1915 states that he joined the 6th Devons (Territorials) in that week. He does not appear to have been sent to any theatre of war until January 1916 where, after 6 months of service in the field, he was admitted to hospital with Anaemia.
Barrett was reported Wounded in Action on 27 September 1917 by which time he was with the 6th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry.
He finished the war with the Somerset Light Infantry and attested with the Coldstream Guards at Exeter on 5 October 1920 and then to the M.P.S.C. on 17 September 1921 before transferring back to the Coldstream Guards on 11 August 1922. He was discharged in London - no longer Physically Fit - on 29 May 1925 with a Character rating of Very Good.
He died in Okehampton, Devon in June 1973.
