Edwin Arnold Vercueil was born in King Williamstown in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa in 1886. He enlisted for service in WWI at Robert's Heights on 25 May 1916 and was posted to the 9th South African Horse, 1st Mounted Brigade with whom he saw service in German East Africa.

He was discharged on 20 May 1917 as "Temporarily Unfit" - in the case of German East Africa this normally always meant that he had succumbed to Malaria, Blackwater Fever or both - a fate which most European troops fell victim too. The climate was tropical, humid and full of pestilence.

He returned to his home in Keiskhama Hoek, district King Williamstown. He was an Attorney on attestation and later practiced in Stutterheim where, in later life, he married for a second time, in Cathcart on 11 June 1936.

Medals are in good condition unless otherwise indicated. Sold with some research including his SA service papers and cards. The medals are his full entitlement.
