Alexander Robertson was an exceptional Engineer and an exceptional man - having attested with the Royal Engineers as a Sapper he was sent to France on 3 May 1915 and soon rose to prominence with the award of the Decoration Legion d'Honneur, Croix de Guerre being conferred on him by The President of the French Republic, for distinguished services rendered during the course of the campaign on 1 May 1917. He was also promoted to Staff Sergeant with no. 402093 and discharged to the Reserve on 7 February 1919.
But it was his WWII service which left a lasting impression on his subordinates and peers. In 1979 an erstwhile colleague of his was prevailed upon to put pen to paper with a few comments about the man - these proved to be a remarkable testimonial and read as follows:
"The greatest influence on me, and I am sure, on every other member of the 103 Army Troops Company RE was "Robbie" himself (Lieut. Colonel Alec Robertson - C.de.G., E.R.D., R.E.) I think I had complete reliance on him and developed a respect for his wisdom, ability and experience which I have carried every since."
"During the peace time years Robbie created a group of men who came to know each other well, who knew each others merits and failings and who became accustomed to working and playing together, both officers and men. We therefore set off on this 39/40 war with the greatest possible confidence in our O.C. and in our unit as a whole. Indeed, our spirits were well up."
"This is a tribute to "Robbie", Major Alec Robertson, a Glasgow Electrical Engineer, who commanded the 103rd (Glasgow) Army Troops Company R.E. (Supplementary Reserve) at Maryhill in the pre-war years. He mobilised the Company and took us over to France (Rheims, Epernay, Bar-de-luc, Verdun, Nancy etc. in Eastern France) in September 1939 and brought us out through St Nazaire in late June 1940."
An undated obituary read, "Mr Alexander Robertson - A past president of the Scottish Electrical Contractor's Association, Mr Alex Robertson, died at Helensburgh on Monday. He was 71. He was the founder and managing director of Alexander Robertson & Co. (Electrical) Ltd. which he started at the end of his service with the Royal Engineers in WWI, during which he won the Croix de Guerre. He was this year's Deacon of the Incorporation of Cordiners, and he represented his association on many bodies, including the British Lighting Council."
Robertson was one of only 23 recipients of three clasps to the A.E.R. Decoration. His combination of medals and awards is unique.
