Joseph Frank Fry was born in on 10 August 1881. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy on 10 August 1899 and served on a variety of vessels leading up to WWI where he served aboard HMS Princess Royal from 13 November 1912 until 12 June 1918 - virtually the entire war. He was at the Battle of Jutland where Princess Royal was moderately damaged, requiring a month and a half of repairs. Apart from providing distant support during the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight in 1917, Princess Royal didn't see much further action.

He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal in the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 1921, having been discharged as Medically Unfit in the same year (Pulmonary Tuberculosis). His address was 40 Vernon Road, Copnor, Portsmouth. Fry died as a result of his illness on 15 December 1923.
