William Henry Gordon Hill was born in Alverstoke, Hampshire on 11 April 1888. He attested for service with the 3rd Divisional Signal Coy, Royal Engineers and went to France with them on 16 August 1914 - less than two weeks after hostilities commenced. He had a successful military career with a number of accolades coming his way - the first of which was a Mention in Dispatches on 4.1.1917. This was followed by the award of the Meritorious Service Medal in the New Years Honours List on 1 January 1918 and the award of the Belgian Croix de Guerre on 15 April 1918 for distinguished services rendered during the course of the campaign.
Hill was described as 10914 Sergeant, "X" Company, S.STC. Royal Engineers on his wedding certificate dated 26 June 1920.
He died in Nuneaton, Warwickshire on 20 December 1931.
