Alfred James Stephens was born in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland in September 1890. He enlisted for service with the Royal Army Service Corps and, according to the 1911 England census, was a 21 year old Driver with them in Barracks. He served in France during WWI from 16 July 1915 attached to 17 Mechanised Transport Company.
He was Mentioned in General Marshall's Dispatch for Mesopotamia on 12 January 1920, going on to earn the North West Persia and Kurdistan clasps to his General Service Medal.
His 1914-15 Star was returned and re-issued.
Stephens had WWII service. He was commissioned a Lieutenant and Quartermaster with the RASC on 5 February 1941 but does not appear to have been posted overseas. He died in the Military Hospital Shenley, Herts on 14 November 1942 after a short illness, at the age of 52.
