Herbert Conibear was born in Barnstaple, Devon on 11.6.1899. He served with both the Devonshire Regiment and the 12th Gloucester Regiment in WWI. Deciding to make soldiering a career, he enlisted post-war with the Somerset Light Infantry in about 1920 and rose through the ranks with them, earning the LSGCM in 1938 in the rank of Colour Sergeant. He was awarded the MSM in the rank of WO 2nd Class and saw service with the RASC with no. 214458 and the rank of Sergeant in WWII. for which he earned the Defence and War Medals.

He was in hot water when, in September 1921, Amy E D Tucker, 20, single, of Braunton, applied for a paternity order against "Herbert Conibear, of Wrafton." They were engaged, but after banns Amy found he already had a child. She was awarded 7s 6d per week.

His WWII medals were posted to him at The Haven, Mortehoe, Devon on 25 September 1949.
