British War Medal (ALEX D. DONALDSON); Mercantile Marine Medal (ALEX D. DONALDSON); Defence Medal; Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve Long Service Medal GVIR (1656 A.D. DONALDSON. A.L.SEA. R.N.V.R.)
Alexander Duncan Donaldson was born in Dundee, Scotland on 26 January 1892. Early records for the Merchant Navy for WWI were destroyed in a fire with only details of service from 1918 available. These show that Donaldson was a Seaman aboard a variety of vessels including the Polycarp, 14 October 1918, the Indore in February 1919 and the Cumberhall in 1921.
He was awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal and British War Medal - both being sent to him on 1 October 1920 to 1 Blackheath Place, Hawkhill, Dundee.
Donaldson continued to serve with the Merchant Navy aboard vessels Portgwarra (late 1921), Arana (1922) and was still serving in 1935. It is not known when he joined the R.N.V.R. in whose service he was awarded the Defence Medal and Long Service Medal.
