Ernest James Goreham was born in Norwich in 1894 but moved to Great Yarmouth at an early age which is where he seems to have spent a large part of his youth and where he enlisted with the Royal Army Service Corps on 24 May 1912. He saw service in the Great War and was an early entrant to France on 10 August 1914 - less than a week after war was declared. He was mustered to the 12th DU of S section of the Army Service Corps.
A career soldier he was several times Mentioned in Dispatches - the first occasion being in the LG of 29 May 1917 in General Haig's dispatch. He was also mentioned in General Plumer's dispatch in the LG of 28 May 1918 for distinguished and gallant service and devotion to duty. This was followed by the award of the Meritorious Service Medal in the New Years Honours List LG of 1 January 1919 by which time Goreham had been deployed to Italy for which theatre the MSM was awarded - he was attached to General Headquarters.
He was afforded further accolades when he was awarded the Croce de Guerra (War Merit Cross) in the LG of 12 May 1919 at which point he was a Staff Quartermaster Sergeant. The war over he continued to serve in the army and was a recipient of the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal in 1930 which was also the year he was discharged and re-enlisted - and the 1935 Jubilee Medal as a WO 1st Class, RASC.
An Assessment of Conduct and Character described him as "Exemplary - Capacity intelligence well above the average. Thoroughly trustworthy and reliable and a hard worker. Is well fitted for any position of responsibility. Possesses initiative, is energetic and far seeing,"
Commissioned a Quartermaster & Lieutenant in the inter-war period, he saw further action in WWII being promoted on 3 September 1943 to Captain and QM. This was followed by promotion to Major in the LG of 2 July 1946 and, finally, retirement on 17 August 1948.
