Jack Chappell was born in Dewsbury Yorkshire in 1923. He enlisted for service in WWII with the 9th Bn Durham Light Infantry and fought with the 8th Army in North Africa and Sicily (Italy) He was taken Prisoner of War at Catania in Sicily on 17.7.1943 and interned at various camps.
He escaped twice only to be recaptured. In his Released POW interview he confirms that he was sheltered and fed by Mario Bati in Monte Vicino at great risk. He was also given clothing etc. On the second occasion, in 1944, he was supplied with food by the villagers of S. Adriano in Parma.
He was repatriated in May 1945 having been liberated from the Stalag in Furnitz by elements of the 8th Army.
According to the 1939 Register he was living at 510 Wakefield Road, Dewsbury, Yorkshire (West Riding) and was a Woolen Yarn Piercer (Heavy Worker)
He died on 2 June 1986 in Ravensthorpe, Yorkshire.
