William George Colin was born in Kimberley, Cape Province on 24 May 1906. He enlisted for service in WWII on 27 June 1940 and was posted to the 1st Field Coy, South Africa Engineer Corps. His first deployment was to East Africa where the fight was against the Italians in Abyssinia. He was then sent on to North Africa/Middle East where he earned the 8th Army clasp.
Returning to South Africa, he signed the General Oath allowing men to serve outside the borders of the country and was sent to North Africa for a second stint, serving with 83 ESBD (Engineering Stores Base Depot) in Egypt from October 1943 until being repatriated to South Africa on 13 September 1945. He was discharged on 8 November 1945.
