1939-45 Star; War Medal 1939-45 - unnamed as awarded in original box of issue addressed to Mrs B.S. Dove, Holmrigg, Sandsend nr Whitby, Yorkshire
Basil Sinclair Dove RASC b Middlesborough 1910. A graduate of Queens College, Cambridge, he served in WWII with the 3 Field Bakery. and was Killed in Action on 1 June 1940 during the evacuation of Dunkirk. He had married Joan Shaw just 7 months earlier, in November 1939 and never lived to see the birth of his daughter on 10 September 1940.
His probate claims that he died at sea which could imply that he was on one of the small boats sunk off Dunkirk which had come over for the evacuation.
Dove was only officially declared dead on 8 August 1941 - a harrowing ordeal for his young wife and family who must still have harboured hope that he might have survived.
